Gear Of The Year Awards 2016: Orion 45 Cooler

The Camping Authority Announces Annual Gear Award for the Orion 45 Cooler

Cooler calamity has reached a fever pitch around the camping world. With so many brands making similar coolers, it can be tough to know where to start. In some cases, if you remove the branding, you couldn’t tell them apart at all.

Arguably our favorite cooler is the Orion 45, featuring a true 45-quart cooler. A lot of coolers claim to be a certain size but because of an insane amount of insulation, you often end up getting way less storage than advertised. The Orion 45 also comes with 6 tie down points! This is one of those features that will have you wondering why no other brand has ever done it before. Finally you’ll have a secure cooler in the back of your car or the bed of your truck. On top of every Orion cooler is a standing pad for traction (especially great if you need a boost to tie down a hammock or secure a tent line). That pad also doubles as a makeshift seat cushion if seating is at a premium. Now for the most important question to ask: Does it keep everything in the cooler cold? We spent a week on the Oregon coast with these coolers and they keep ice better than any cooler we’ve ever used – period.
