Pie Iron Sloppy Joes

We spent the night camping and used the pie iron for all of our meals. It was glorious. You can make just about anything in a pie iron we made Omelets for breakfast, these delicious sloppy joes for dinner and a cherry cream cheese pie for dessert.

We love using a pie iron for multiple reasons: there is rarely any difficult clean up, everyone can use them and they make easy, handheld meals. It’s not very often that you think of making a Philly Cheesesteak when camping, but with a pie iron that is an easy meal.

These pie iron sloppy joes went over well with the whole family. By adding a little cheese to the mix you’re able to get the sloppy joes to easily melt together and stick. To make things really easy at the campsite, I made the sloppy joes ahead of time and put them in a container. Below is the recipe for the sloppy joes, you can also use a sloppy joe mix like Manwich.

Recipe type: Dinner/Lunch
Cuisine: American
Serves: 1

Ingredients
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • ¼ cup onion, chopped
  • ¼ cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 3 teaspoons brown sugar
  • salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste

  1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, and green pepper; drain off liquids. Stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. To assemble, spray the pie iron with cooking spray. Put buttered bread face down in pie iron, cover with about 3 tablespoon of sloppy joe mix and 1 tablespoon of cheese. Cover with other piece of buttered bread and close pie iron.
  3. Cook over hot coals for 2 minutes, turn and cook the other side for 2 minutes. Check often as it can burn quickly.
