“Ever heard a happy [Patagonian] mara?” asks an animal rescue and sanctuary in Bloomington, Indiana called The Pipsqueakery. The organization shared a video on Facebook showing a Patagonian mara making a truly baffling sound. You’ll have to hear it for yourself to believe it.

The Pipsqueakery introduces the sweet little critter as Greg, a friendly Patagonian mara that lives at the sanctuary. Patagonian maras are long-legged rodents native to Argentina. In the video, Greg makes a purr/squeak/whistle-y sound that’s incredibly unique. When a human reaches in to pet Greg, the sound becomes even more intense.
