Young American Hiker Found Dead After Fatal Fall in Pyrenees

A month after a young American hiker went for a solo hike in the Pyrenees on the border of Spain and France, authorities found his body in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. The missing hiker, 27-year-old Cole Henderson, was living in the Netherlands and vacationing in northern Spain, exploring the Pyrenees mountain range.

In a Facebook post dated July 15 in a group called Hiking Trails in Spain, Henderson’s friend Max Senoff posted the following call for help:

“Hi everyone — my friend Cole Henderson, a 27-year-old American, missed his return flight on Sunday July 13, and no one has heard from him since Wednesday July 9 at 14:00 when he said via text that he parked his car in Torla, turned his phone on airplane mode, and began his hike. His phone last pinged in Torla, and we believe he was hiking alone in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. We don’t know his exact route, but we believe he may have entered the park from the Torla side. He was hiking the pyranees.”

One woman who was actively hiking in the area during this time assured Senoff and Henderson’s cousin, who was also active in this comment thread, that everyone in the area was on high alert and looking for “the missing American.”

Sadly, yesterday, officials announced they discovered Henderson’s body “in a difficult-to-access area” on the north face of Monte Perdido. The hiker had fallen about 200 meters to his death.
