A hiker on the El Cajon Mountain Trail in San Diego County, California, was stopped in his tracks by a deep rumbling sound—a mountain-lion growl—and he said it scared the living daylights out of him.

“That sounded like something I don’t want to meet,” said Anthony Duca in his video, which he posted to Instagram and TikTok.

In his caption, Duca wrote: “Mountain lion growled as I walked by it, I turned around as you don’t want to have your back turned to it, to see if it was standing there looking at me, it was hidden in the bush so at that point, I just kept moving. If I was prey, it would’ve been quiet so it was giving me a warning saying stay away.”
