A disturbing but important video from Bear Smart Durango shows a black bear struggling after becoming stuck in a dumpster in Durango, Colorado. In the footage, the bear’s top half is above a cracked dumpster lid, but the animal can’t seem to get the rest of its body up through the opening. It struggles pretty hard and eventually pulls itself fully out. The person recording says, “He’s exhausted!”

“Surely our community can do better than this for our wild neighbors – and for the safety of residents,” wrote Bear Smart Durango in the Instagram post sharing the video, then cites a city ordinance stating that all trash containers must be able to withstand wildlife. This dumpster clearly cannot.
In the comments, a local business chimed in, saying that once this bear escaped, it was limping.
