An unusual scene from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, made for a popular video on social media. In the footage, a black bear sniffs out some uncooked burger patties sitting inside an unlit backyard grill, lifts the lid, and eats some of the meat.

“Mel (her video) came out to find that her grill area at her cabin had been taken over by the bears. You really can’t leave things unattended in the Smokies,” wrote Smoky Mountain Faith, Food & Fun in a Facebook post sharing the video.
The online community notes that had a hot grill certainly would have deterred the bear. Some people question whether this was all a stunt. Was the meat bait to attract the bear for a video? Either way, it’s clear that unattended food is not a safe bet in bear country—especially this time of year.
