A Battle of Venomous African Snakes: Cape Cobra vs. Puff Adder

Even when you’re a bad*ss snake, you might become food for another bad*ss snake. A puff adder in South Africa recently learned this lesson when it went up against a cape cobra and lost. An iNaturalist user caught the cobra vs. adder battle on camera and shared her observation with the iNaturalist community.

In the photo series, you can see what iNaturalist users identify as a cape cobra (Naja nivea) dining on what appears to be a puff adder (Bitis arietans). The cobra has already ingested the front part of the adder’s body, but it still has a ways to go before it’s done with its snake snack. Both cobras and adders are venomous snakes and formidable predators. On this day, the cobra was the most formidable.
