Jackie and Shadow, the internet-famous pair of bald eagles that live in California’s Big Bear Valley, have experienced a tragic setback. After recently laying their first two eggs of the season, the eagles briefly left the nest unattended on Friday afternoon, and a raven swooped in and broke the eggs open.

The Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), the non-profit that operates the livestream nest cameras, notes that one of the eggs may have already been cracked. Regardless, both eggs are no longer viable, and FOBBV says it’s possible that Jackie may lay a third egg this season, but we’ll all have to wait and see.

“I saw this live and was heartbroken,” wrote one person in the comments section. Others chimed in saying the same thing.
