I Survived Bear Grylls: TBS Show Puts Adventurer Into New Terrain

Strap in. Grab the snacks. Put your phone on do not disturb. Get ready to see something completely different from Bear Grylls.

The brand new Bear Grylls TV show, I Survived Bear Grylls, starts this Thursday, May 18 on TBS, and even though you’ve probably watched him on screen before, doing some extreme challenges and sharing his life-saving survival skills, this show hits different.

Survival game show

This time, instead of watching the former special forces soldier and Everest mountaineer survive in some of the world’s harshest environments, we’ll be watching people trying to survive Bear Grylls himself, in a new competition that mixes elements of survival and game shows together.

Bear Grylls has spent his entire career rescuing himself – and others – from death in some of the most dangerous parts of the world. Now, instead of sacrificing himself in the wild to teach survival skills, he’s turning the tables to America’s armchair adventurers by creating wilderness-simulated challenges that will test the contestants’ brains, fitness and ability to adapt and do whatever it takes to survive – including having to eat and drink some truly disgusting survival food.

Can you do it better?

The series, hosted by Bear and co-hosted by comedian Jordan Conley, has eight episodes. In each one, five players face grueling games that have been designed to take Bear’s most legendary adventures from the wild up a notch.

It’s the perfect adventure game show for all those people that sit at home and say ‘I can do that’ when they see Bear Grylls in action. Now, they have to get off the couch and prove they’ve got what it takes.

“Every day I meet people who think they could do it better,” says Bear. “Everybody talks a good game but when you’re under pressure, cold, hungry, and tired – and all that at the same time – then you see what people are made of.”

The contestants face what is potentially going to be the hardest, the dirtiest, the most disgusting, but potentially the most rewarding day of their life, trying to show that they have what it takes to survive in the wild by succeeding at the challenges. Each week, the final contestant standing at the end of the episode can proudly claim I Survived Bear Grylls and win a cash prize.

Time to show up

In week one, we meet everyone from a superfan to a gym rat and a guy who admits that he ‘talks a big game at home’ so he thought it was time to show up. Get ready for everything from tears, to laughter, to brain-teasers and near-vomiting – and that’s just you at home.

“The fun part of the show is you don’t know who is going to win at the end of each episode, but they get pushed hard,” says Bear “It’s about being calm in a crisis because everything is thrown at them all at the same time fast— but it’s a really fun and empowering show.”

I Survived Bear Grylls premieres on Thursday, May 18 on TBS at 9pm ET/PT. Watch the show’s trailer and then see for yourself if you could survive I Survived Bear Grylls.
