Several elementary-school children and teachers are injured after a grizzly bear attacked them during a class field trip in British Columbia, Canada. BC (British Columbia) Emergency Health Services‘ latest update suggests that of the 11 people injured in the animal attack, two were in critical condition and two more were in serious condition. Four victims remain in the hospital, but there are no further details available at this time.

“We are thinking of all the patients, families, community members, first responders, healthcare workers and others impacted by the tragic incident in Bella Coola yesterday,” wrote BC Emergency Health Services in an Instagram post. “BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 1:46 p.m. on November 20 about an animal attack on a trail near Highway 20 in Bella Coola. Two ambulances and a community paramedic responded to the scene. Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to four patients and transported them to hospital. Two patients were in critical condition and two were in serious condition. A further seven people were cared for at the scene but did not require hospital transport.”

AP News reports the school children were with parents and teachers on a walking trail when the bear attacked. Bear spray was deployed, and one teacher in particular bore the brunt of the attack when he stepped in to try to protect the children. None of the victims are being named at this time.
