Scuba Dan posts some fun diving videos on social media, and one of his recent videos shows what one commenter called a “hump-scare.” In the footage, Dan is waiting for a large animal to appear, and he doesn’t know what it is until it nearly knocks into him. Surprise, it’s a humpback whale.

“The suspense of diving is all part of the experience!” wrote Scuba Dan in his Instagram post sharing the video. “In some oceans anything can turn up at any point . . . and sometimes you wont see it coming.”

Dan explains in his caption that he was diving in South Africa near a place called White Shark Alley, filming a sardine run. He saw a ominously large shadow beneath him in the murky water—too large to be a great white, he writes in a text overlay.
After a tense few moments of waiting, the animal reveals itself, and nearly pummels Dan in the process.
