A mountain biker had a camera set up to record his tricks, but he ended up with a different kind of video entirely. Alex Jaffe was mountain biking in the North Shore Mountains of British Columbia, Canada when he came face to face with a black bear, and the animal began advancing toward him. Jaffe did everything right, making noise and using his bike to make himself look larger and more intimidating.

In the footage, which Jaffe shared to his YouTube channel, you first see Jaffe speed past on his bike. Then you see him backtracking, walking his bike back up the small hill and looking nervously behind him. Jaffe stops once he gains higher ground, and that’s when the special guest appears—a curious black bear.
