A New Year’s Day hike turned deadly for Kristen Kovatch after at least one mountain lion fatally attacked her. More hikers are now coming forward, saying they were stalked by mountain lions on the same trail. CBS News Colorado interviewed a pair of hikers who explained in detail how three mountain lions surrounded them on the Crosier Mountain Trail outside of Glen Haven, Colorado not long before Kovatch’s fatal attack.

CBS News infers these two hikers aren’t the only ones who encountered cougars in the area prior to the incident.
“In the aftermath of a woman’s apparent killing by a mountain lion on a trail in Northern Colorado on New Year’s Day, several people who have had recent encounters with mountain lions in the area are sharing their stories,” wrote CBS News Colorado in an Instagram post. “[Colorado Parks and Wildlife] has already euthanized at least two mountain lions in the area since the fatal attack.”

Although CPW had been actively searching for a third cougar, the latest update suggests they have called off that search. Human DNA was present on one of the euthanized lion’s paws.
