Ben Thouard is an ocean photographer and artist, and he captures incredible photos of surfers from underwater—a vantage point you don’t usually see. The 2022 Ocean Photographer of the Year posts some of his stunning photos on Instagram to share with his community.

Thouard’s photos are somehow crisp and clear, even amidst the chaos of the crashing waves. The deep blue and silvery hues transport you to a tranquil, other-worldly place, where surfers go for a few moments after catching a wave and before they surface for a breath. His photos take you below the surfer as he or she rides a wave, appearing as little more than a blurry shadow when viewed from beneath.
