Foresters are essential workers who protect our public lands. They use scientific methods to protect our public lands from wildfires and other environmental threats that impact the outdoors. You can get a glimpse of what it’s like to be a forester with the help of Katelyn Johnson. She’s a forester, arborist and tree follower who’s grown a massive following online.

Here’s one of her videos:
The video shows Johnson working to take down a massive tree. Before she uses a chainsaw around the stump, she removes her axe to have it ready in case she needs to quickly get away from the massive tree in Northern California.
“If you see me lose the axe you know I’ll be running,” posted Johnson along with the video. “Big nasty snags usually = big nasty limbs. Get off the stump!”
As the tree falls, you can see the massive tree covered with dead limbs.
Trees like this are a public safety hazard for visitors and others spending time outdoors. They can also serve as fuel for potential wildfires, so removing them is often the best course of action. It’s Johnson’s job and the job of many others to assess tree health and remove dangerous ones like this.
In another video, Johnson is in the forest removing a large dead tree. In the background, you can see smoke and fire, highlighting the extreme conditions that often come with the job.
Be a Forester
If you think it sounds cool to be a forester, you’re not alone. Plus, there’s a need for this work throughout the country, but especially in the West.
Becoming a forester usually requires work in forestry, which can be a two or four year degree, depending on what you’re looking to do. Many colleges around the country offer opportunities.
There’s even an association that certifies foresters, and they have an entire list of approved programs on its website.
