No matter how many times you head outdoors, there’s something new to discover. For instance, imagine how many tiny mushrooms we’re all passing up as we hike through the forest. Ryan Dale is a skilled U.K.-based photographer who specializes in macro photography. His photos of tiny mushrooms are nothing short of breathtaking.

In one photo, a speck on a branch is really a gorgeous crystal-like mushroom. In another, a brown dot on a log is actually an alien-looking fungus with all kinds of texture we’d never be able to see otherwise.
What’s makes Dale’s work even more special is that he shows his audience some tidbits from behind the scenes. In a recent video compilation of Dale’s work, for instance, you can see the tiny mushrooms in situ before you see Dale’s photo of it up close. Observing how minuscule some of these ‘shrooms really are just makes the end result even more impressive.
“Using advanced macro techniques, [Dale] captures the intricate details and vibrant colors of these fungi, often found in natural settings,” writes Daily Dose of Art, the outlet that shared the compilation video on Instagram.
