Usually, on a day hike, you don’t expect much to happen. It’s just a great way to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. But for one hiker, a quick hike led to the rescue of a lost dog in the woods.

Colorado-based hiker Jason Hawkins posted the video after going on what he says was a short hike.

In the post, Hawkins recounts the entire ordeal after spotting a small black dog off the trail. The canine allows Hawkins to approach, but is fairly nervous and even nips at him when he tries to pick it up.
Without a rope or much gear, Hawkins gets creative to find a way to bring the dog out of the woods. Fortunately, he has a tripod with a carabiner on it. He’s able to hook it to the dog and hike out with the small animal.
Once Hawkins and the dog reach the trailhead, he manages to send a text message despite limited service. He says the owner arrived a short time later, and there was a tearful reunion. However, Hawkins says he chose not to film that part.
“Here’s a reminder to be kind and help when you can,” he said in his post. “You never know when someone might need you.”
What to Do If You Find a Lost Dog in the Woods
If you find a lost dog in the woods, the first step is to keep your own safety in mind.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends paying attention to the dog’s body language and approaching it slowly. Try to squat down and allow the dog to smell you. They also suggest turning your body sideways and avoiding direct eye contact to help the animal feel more comfortable. If the dog allows it, you can attempt to leash it with what you have—such as a rope, belt, or any other safe item.
However, if the animal is aggressive, it’s best to keep your distance and take a photo or video to share once you’re safely out of the woods.
Once out of the woods, you can contact the owners if there is information or local animal officials.
