A video on Instagram shows a jaguar walking through a forest in Costa Rica followed closely by a puma, but is that even possible? Those two cats wouldn’t tolerate each other’s casual presence, would they? The video actually shows two clips from the same trail camera taken days apart. Even though the cats didn’t pass by this spot at the exact same time, the video is still an interesting visual showing how multiple predator species in an ecosystem use the same land in similar ways.

RAWR SZN shared the video, crediting it to Tico’s Wild Studio. “These two big cats were filmed days apart in the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, and their movements were combined into one video to highlight how they navigate the same environment,” wrote RAWR SZN in the Instagram post. “Although jaguars and pumas share territory in some regions, they don’t tolerate each other and avoid direct encounters. If they crossed paths in real life, the jaguar, being larger and more dominant, would likely drive the puma away.”
