Yellowstone Tourists Weren’t Ready for This Bison Encounter

A group of tourists at Yellowstone National Park were watching some bears from an overpass when, suddenly, they got an unexpected bison encounter. Wildlife and landscape photographer Jay Andersen was watching the humans ignore the bison from a distance, probably wondering when they were going to start moving away.

“A few bison having fun scaring some folks on a bridge across the Lamar River in Yellowstone National Park,” Andersen wrote in his YouTube video’s caption. “The crowd was watching some bears and not paying attention to the approaching bison. I was watching from a distance (200 meters or so) and was waiting for the bison to stir things up.”

Thankfully, the bison didn’t stir things up to a dangerous level. (But, in reality, being this close to bison is inherently dangerous.)

After a bison gored a man earlier in the year, Yellowstone wrote: “It is your responsibility to stay more than 25 yards (23 meters) away from all large animals – bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes – and at least 100 yards (91 meters) away from bears and wolves. If wildlife approach you, move away to always maintain these safe viewing distances.”
