Weekend Roundup: Mikela Shiffrin Wins 89th World Cup, Attenborough’s Egg-Laying Mammal Finally Photographed, More

U.S. skier Mikela Shiffrin took the slalom win at the World Cup in Finland yesterday. Despite a bone bruise on her knee, Shiffrin bested her top rival, and current Olympic slalom champion, Petra Vlhova. It’s Shiffrin’s 89th World Cup win, extending her all-time record. More here.

Speaking of skiing milestones – has anyone ever jumped over a chairlift? Not sure, but check out this footage of a pair of Team Red Bull skiers do just that as they rip up Mammoth Mountain on an epic party run: 


South Africa’s national parks are under pressure to curtail a rise in hunting, with new numbers released this weekend, showing a a rise in buffalo and impalas being snared. 


If you’ve never heard of Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna, it’s totally understandable. Discovered over six decades ago, the rare, Indonesian egg-laying mammal (yes, it’s named after famed broadcaster Sir David Attenborough) has been documented. However, it has never been filmed or photographed. Until now.


Cairngorms National Park, in northeast Scotland, will see some new construction within its borders soon, as a whisky distillery has been given the green light to build a new production facility within the park. More here.


And if you care about Jared Leto’s recent publicity stunt / climb of the Empire State Building, you might also care that he was recently out climbing with climbing royalty Alex Honnold.
Over the weekend, Honnold posted about their climb on Instagram, and it would appear that the majority of his social followers disapproved of the Free Solo star’s new climbing friend.: “Gross,” remarked @elizabeth_bbe, while @masn_king asked: “jared leto dude??? Really?????”
