Like a wardrobe malfunction on live TV, a violent encounter between wild animals on a trail-cam livestream sometimes gives viewers more than they bargained for. Web viewers of the Brooks Falls Explore Live Nature Cam got a front-row seat when a large grizzly bear in Alaska’s Katmai National Park attacked another bear’s cub at Brooks Falls.

Brooks Falls is a popular fishing spot for Katmai’s brown bears, which flock to the spot each summer to catch sockeye salmon as the fish journey upstream to spawn. On July 27th, the fishing spot turned into a sparring ring for two bears fighting over a cub, proving that nature can be brutal.
A beloved mama bear named Grazer (last year’s Fat Bear Week winner) went head to head with her Fat Bear Week runner up, Chunk, when the male grizzly attacked one of her cubs as they were all fishing in the river.
In a replay of the live video, you can watch as Grazer’s two cubs slip down the falls into dangerous territory. There are grown bears everywhere. Chunk goes for one of the cubs, but Grazer fights him off. Unfortunately, there are two cubs and just one mama bear, so at one point, Chunk grabs a cub. Grazer again fights him off and he lets go of the cub, but the cub is injured.
The cub survived the encounter, but wildlife officials do not know for sure if it’s still alive.
Park rangers and Explore.org’s resident naturalist Mike Fitz provided commentary on the Grazer vs. Chunk event several days later. Hear their commentary and watch the altercation starting at about 12:00 here:
