Popular Reddit Post Discusses How Camping Isn’t Always Fun

“My most recent camping trip was . . . not that enjoyable,” writes a Reddit user on the r/camping thread. Sacrilege, right? As a person who loves camping, I’m offended on behalf of camping and everyone who loves it. But, then again, maybe we should hear this person out. If I’m honest, I can entertain the idea that camping isn’t always fun. Like that time my kid spiked a fever in the middle of nowhere—that wasn’t fun. Or the time the wind made it impossible to sleep (also not fun). Sometimes, you have a dud of a camping trip, even though I hate to admit it. Perhaps this is why the Reddit post resonated with so many people who subscribe to a thread about camping.

“So I recently camped in the Arkansas ozarks and it got down to 3°f,” writes the Reddit user. “I think my hands were numb the whole time. It was too cold to sit by the fire, so that was just for cooking. At night i read for hours in the tent under a blanket so my hands didn’t get frostbite. For breakfast I planned on having some eggs, cheese, and smoked sausage. I put all of that in an insulated lunchbox inside my truck, but it all still froze, solid. No breakfast for me . . . and on top of all the my truck wouldn’t start when i went to leave! So I had to just wait there, in the freezing cold for my friend to come Jumpstart it.”

The post about this person’s dud of a camping trip has 1,800 “up votes” and nearly 300 comments. Among the comments are many encouraging tips for cold-weather camping. Many other campers chime in to admit that sometimes bad camping trips are just investments in future good camping trips, since you learn a lot as you go.
