A 17-year-old mountaineer achieved her goal by summiting Mount Everest in May. It was the last of the Seven Summits she climbed alongside her father, making her the youngest American female to climb Mount Everest and the youngest American woman to hike the highest mountain on each of the seven continents.

The young mountaineer, Emma Schwerin, became inspired after doing a middle-school project on Mount Everest. Her family took a trip to Basecamp, and that’s when the fire in her belly really ignited. Her parents supported her dream to tackle the Seven Summits, and she worked hard for two years to build up strength and gain experience. It all culminated May 15, when she stood atop the tallest peak in the world.

Schwerin shared her thoughts with Climbing the Seven Summits, saying:
“It felt very surreal to be standing on top of the world. My Dad and I have been working towards this goal for the last two years, so completing it and standing at the top felt like a dream. I felt very proud of myself and my Dad for everything we were able to achieve in the last 17 months. [. . .] It was incredibly rewarding to reach the summit not only because it’s the top of the world but also because it is a reflection of all of the hard work I had put in. It reminded me of when I first started and how big my dreams had seemed at the time, but here I was making them come true.”
