Two young brown bears managed to escape from their enclosure at Wildwood Devon, a zoo in the U.K., and eat a week’s worth of honey (and other snacks) in less than an hour. The organization posted about the snafu on Facebook, noting that the public was never at risk.

“Two young bears escaped from their enclosure at Wildwood Devon this afternoon, heading straight for their food store,” wrote Wildwood Devon in a Facebook post announcing the incident, which attracted world-wide media attention. “Mish and Lucy (both 5 years), who posed no threat to the public at any point, enjoyed a selection of snacks – including a week’s worth of honey – before being safely returned to their enclosure by the expert keeper team within the hour.”

Wildwood Devon says security cameras had eyes on the bears continuously until they calmly returned to their enclosure and fell asleep. (It sounds like a bit of a food coma was in order.) The organization then posted security-cam footage of one of the bears munching on some snacks, providing an additional update about how it happened.
“We would like to thank everyone for their messages of support and concern following the recent incident involving our European brown bears, Mish and Lucy,” wrote Wildwood Devon. “We can now confirm that this was the result of an operational error, which allowed the bears to briefly access a staff-only food storage area.”
