Runway Ruckus: Bear Causes Flight Delays in Japan

On Thursday morning at the Yamagata Airport in Higashine, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, an employee spotted a black bear near the runway. Local news reported the bear to be about 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall. After the employee spotted the bear, it disappeared, causing airport officials to close the runway.

CNN posted a video of the runway ruckus on social media, writing: “A nearly 4-foot bear caused major disruption at Japan’s Yamagata Airport on Thursday morning, wandering onto the runway and grounding 10 flights to and from major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, and Nagoya.”

The footage shows the bear running around on a paved surface as vehicles drive nearby. It’s not clear whether the vehicles were part of the effort to divert the bear or not.
