Man Falls Into Glacier Crevasse, Survives Thanks to Chihuahua

A man’s Chihuahua likely saved his life after he fell into a glacier crevasse while hiking in Switzerland with his dog late last week. According to Swiss helicopter rescue company Air Zermatt, the man and the Chihuahua were on Fee Glacier when the man fell through a “snow bridge” and became stuck in a crevasse.

The man was able to call for help using a walkie-talkie, but no one could find exactly where he’d fallen through. Thankfully, the dog did not fall through and was standing guard near the small hole in the snow. Air Zermatt says helicopter crews found the spot thanks to the dog’s movement down below.

“At 3.00 pm, an Air Zermatt crew with three KWRO rescue specialists on board then took off in the direction of the Fee Glacier,” wrote the company in a press release. “On site, the search for the collapse site proved difficult. The glacier surface was wide and the hole was barely visible. Then a decisive moment: one of the rescue specialists spotted a small movement on a rock: the Chihuahua! Right next to it was the collapse hole through which the man had fallen into the crevasse. Thanks to the dog’s behaviour, the crew was able to locate the exact site of the accident. The rescuers abseiled down to the casualty and were able to save him. Patient and dog were flown to hospital in Visp.”

Air Zermatt further called the Chihuahua “a four-legged hero.”
