Dharali lies in the state of Uttarakhand, located in the western Himalayas. The area is mountainous and prone to mudslides and flash flooding. This week, the area has seen continuous rainfall, but BBC and other news outlets credit a “cloudburst” with swelling the Kheerganga River and triggering the flash flooding. A cloudburst refers to a sudden, brief, and very heavy rainfall over a relatively small area.

It’s possible this sort of disaster may become more frequent in years to come. “With approximately 10,000 glaciers in the Indian Himalayas, many of which are retreating due to rising global temperatures, the area faces ongoing environmental challenges and the risk of future disasters,” wrote the Al Jazeera Media Network in a YouTube video sharing footage of the flood.
