Tourists Capture Video of Elk Fighting in a Popular National Park

One of the benefits of visiting a national park is the chance to see wildlife. That includes everything from wolves to elk. Sometimes the animals can be elusive, but other times, they’re front and center, much like in this video of elk fighting in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Take a look at the recent clip:

The video was shared by Accuweather but originally posted by TikTok user @amymeekmcpeters.

The video shows dozens of park visitors pulling over on the side of the road to capture the scene. Other drivers are being urged to keep moving, as many people slow down to watch two elk butt heads in a field nearby.

The scene is something that happens often in the Smokies. There are only a few spots for these large animals east of the Mississippi, so it’s a big tourist draw. And in the fall, it becomes even more exciting as elk enter the rut season.

Elk Fighting Increases in Rut Season

Rut season happens every fall. It’s mating season for the 700-pound animal. While it’s a spectacular sight, it’s also a little more dangerous to be around elk during this time of year. Male elk will fight with one another for a mate. Because they become more aggressive, people need to keep a greater distance.

“During the rut, male elk (bulls), experience heightened testosterone levels and are more likely to exhibit defensive behavior as they compete for dominance,” the National Park Service writes on its website. “Bulls will charge or challenge anything they perceive as a threat, including people and vehicles. Additionally, female elk (cows), remain protective of their calves, adding to the overall stress amongst elk herds.”

Visitors are asked to respect closures to protect the animals during this time of year. Also, people should stay at least 50 feet away from elk. If the animal approaches, people should back away to maintain that 50 feet.
