Rescue Center Reveals How They Saved A Turtle That Was Covered In Organisms

Rescue centers deal with animals with a variety of ailments. Some are simple fixes, while other situations require more delicate care. One situation that required a wide variety of treatment was for a turtle that had washed up on shore. The turtle was found on a beach near Galveston, Texas, and the poor thing was covered in organisms.

After a rare turtle washed up on a beach covered in organisms, The Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research knew they needed to help. People Magazine shared that the turtle in question was a “critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle.”

Now, the rescue center is sharing the details about how they have been caring for this poor creature. After initally saving the animal, the resuce center shared a post about the save. In that post they shared that “She was lethargic and covered in epibionts, including barnacles, algae and sediment.” The photos that accompanied the post showed the poor sea turtle completley covered in these organisms.

Her head, flippers, and shell were all completely covered and she looked exhausted. The sea turtle was immediately taken to the Houston Zoo, where she was reviewed by veterarians. Afterwards, The Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research took her to their rehabilitation hospital.

A Recent Update

On March 14, the Gulf Center for Sear Turtle Research shared an update on the turtle covered in organisms. They shared that the turtle is “currently recieving treatment for severe pneumonia and associated ocular ulcers,” both of which were identified during her medical evaluation.

Due to her serious condition, the turtle is recieving ongoing care and continous support. Despite the severity of her conditions, the team remains hopeful that she will improve. Additioanlly, their goal is to one day reintroduce her to her natural habitat.

They thanked those who donated and encouraged anyone who wants to help with her recovery to make a donation to their operational fund.
