Sage Jefferys couldn’t help himself when he saw a spotted eagle ray flopping around on a burning-hot dock. He and a pal found a life preserver and Jefferys helped the stingray back into the water, nearly getting a nasty sting in the process.

“I was just chillin on my boat about 50 meters away and heard this strange sound of flapping which immediately caught my attention,” Jefferys wrote in his Instagram post sharing the footage. “This poor SPOTTED EAGLE RAY had launched itself out of the water straight onto the boiling hot dock. [. . .] And in the aftermath we found the spotted eagle [ray’s] BARB!”

It’s a good thing that barb didn’t end up lodged in Jefferys’ skin, because not only is the barb very sharp, but it also injects toxic venom. When the pair of Good Samaritans saw the barb lying on the deck, they realized how lucky they were.
