Yesterday, on Earth Day, California State Parks announced plans to create three new state parks. The initiative, called State Parks Forward, aims to dedicate an additional 30,000 acres of land to the state-park system by the end of this decade. California State Parks says this is the biggest expansion of the state-park system in decades.

“Exciting news for Earth Day! [. . .] We are introducing State Parks Forward, a bold vision establishing three new state parks while at the same time expanding existing parks by another 30,000 acres by the end of the decade,” wrote California State Parks on Instagram. “Simply put, State Parks Forward means more parks in more places.”

The initiative will increase the number of state parks in the state to 283. The locations of the new parks will be:
- Feather River Park (Olivehurst, Yuba County)
- San Joaquin River Parkway (Fresno and Madera counties)
- Dust Bowl Camp (Bakersfield, Kern County)
