For the first time in years, scientists have visual proof that rare mountain bongos still live in the Maasai Mau forest of Kenya, thanks to trail cams. Chester Zoo, a partner in the bongo-monitoring project, recently shared a series of trail-cam photos to celebrate the conservation win.

“We have AMAZING conservation news to share!” wrote Chester Zoo on Instagram. “Hidden cameras have rediscovered critically endangered mountain bongos in Kenya’s Maasai Mau forest for the first time in YEARS – bringing renewed hope for the future of one of the world’s rarest species Conservationists thought these incredible animals had vanished from this forest, and with fewer than 50 mountain bongos surviving in the wild, this is an incredible discovery!”
