A pet dog that was missing/evading capture for over a month in Yellowstone National Park has finally been caught. The dog, Luna, is a Jack Russell terrier that escaped from the cabin she and her family were staying at in Canyon Village after staff opened the door to provide housekeeping service. The dog survived in the Yellowstone wilderness for weeks, frequently evading capture after people would spot her. That is, until this week, when Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center successfully trapped Luna in a humane and remotely monitored trap that lures dogs using scents.

“On September 10, 2026 . . . a little Jack Russel Terrier was let out of a locked cabin and into the Yellowstone wilderness,” wrote the recovery center in a post describing the situation. “She has even been in the lodges and eateries. But she is faster than lighting and will not allow anyone to approach her. Thanks to the diligent efforts of many employees in the Park, we have located the general area where Luna has been sheltering. We have been able to secure unique permission from the National Park Service to trap her using a special live trap developed to catch lost scared dogs [. . .] and now we wait.”

Yesterday, the center posted a celebratory post, saying: “WE GOT HER!!! Luna is safe. More to follow.”
And today, the organization shared footage of Luna in the trap. Finally, her ordeal is over.
