‘Apocalyptic’ Wall of Dust Descended on Chicago Yesterday (Video)

Severe weather has left a trail of destruction through the United States’ Midwest and South. AP News reports that storms killed at least 23 people, many of them in Kentucky. Farther north in the greater Chicago area, an “apocalyptic” wall of dust moved through the area, and the footage is pretty wild.

“Well that was . . . something,” wrote the U.S. National Weather Service of Chicago, Illinois in a Facebook post. “This marks the second time our office has issued Dust Storm Warnings (the first time was on May 7, 2023). With that said, this was the first time we ever issued a Dust Storm Warning that included the Chicago area.”

The National Weather Service explained that the origins of the dust storm were thunderstorms in the central area of the state, which produced 60-70-mph winds. The winds then whipped through dry farmlands, picking up a massive amount of dust. “The trajectory of the push of wind was oriented into the Chicago area. Hence, we got a dust storm,” the National Weather Service explained.

Video footage of the so-called “wall of dust” looks like something you’d see in a movie about the end of days. Timelapse footage also shows how visibility in the city changed to almost zero in a very short amount of time.
