Bear Cubs Orphaned After Mom Euthanized Post-Attack on Human

The San Diego Humane Society is caring for two bear cubs orphaned after California wildlife authorities euthanized their mother. The mother black bear attacked a woman in Monrovia, California, swiping at her leg while the woman was walking her dog. The woman and the dog are OK. Officials captured the mother bear and her cubs, confirmed through a DNA test that they had the right bear, and then put the animal down. Many people following the story have wondered what happened to the cubs.

“Right now, a pair of male black bear cubs is safe and receiving care at our Ramona Wildlife Center,” wrote the San Diego Humane Society in an Instagram post earlier today. “Our team is hard at work giving them the best possible chance to return to the wild.”

The organization states that the two male black-bear cubs are about 2-3 months old. According to veterinarians, they are in good physical health.

“Our Project Wildlife team will continue to monitor their progress as they grow, providing around-the-clock feedings, expert medical care and species-specific enrichment,” the Humane Society adds. “With some creativity and dedication, we’ll help them develop their survival instincts and remain wild.”
