Big Rig Swept Away by Flood in Texas, More Flooding Possible

Much of southeast Texas are under a flood watch today, with mandatory evacuations along the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. After the tornado outbreak in the Midwest and Great Plains last week, it seems the U.S. can’t catch a break from severe weather.

Yesterday, flood waters in Livingston, Texas swept a big rig right off the freeway—with the driver still inside. Onlookers stopped in their tracks by the flooding caught the moment on video.

In the clip, you can see the semi-truck lose control and start drifting horizontally as it angles and partially sinks into the water. A man in a fluorescent shirt climbs out of the driver’s side and sits helplessly on the hood as his truck drifts across the highway.

People on dry land on the other side of the road can’t reach him, but they yell at the man to get out. Other vehicles, including other big rigs, continue to drive through the flood waters as the scene unfolds.

Meteorologists say there are strong jet stream winds over Texas this week, which can morph into thunderstorm complexes. According to ABC 13 News, “another complex could be on the way for Friday afternoon.”
