The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) recently announced a “rare and exciting” milestone. They spotted an extremely elusive mammal and got photos to prove it.

“CDFW biologists have successfully captured, GPS-collared, and released a Sierra Nevada red fox in the southern Sierra for the very first time,” CDFW wrote in an Instagram post sharing the news and photos. “Fewer than 50 of these elusive carnivores are believed to remain in the Sierra and their lives are spent far from people, sightings are incredibly rare.”
