It’s not every day that you spot a deer swimming in the ocean over a mile from shore. For Charlie of charlielikeswater, this wasn’t a normal sight, either, but he’ll remember it forever thanks to his photos.

In an Instagram post sharing the confusing photos, he makes the situation slightly less confusing by explaining what happened. He says he and a team were documenting a marine-debris cleanup effort on or near Great Brewster Island in Boston Harbor when they spotted the deer heading toward the island, too. He named the animal “Ocean Buck.”

“When I first spotted the deer, it was swimming towards Great Brewster Island, a couple hundred yards from the beach. To its back was 1.4 miles of open ocean. Measured it,” Charlie wrote. “Great Brewster is usually devoid of humans, but there were a couple dozen of us on the island that day. I was on the job documenting a marine debris cleanup effort. So we were there for good reason, but it was bad timing for the deer. He pulled a u-turn after seeing people on the shoreline. That’s a long swim just to turn around once you get there. If he had swam out with the current, it would be a tough swim back.”
When Charlie lost sight of the deer, it was heading back toward Boston.
