Diver Spots Rare, ‘Incredibly Special’ Creature off California Coast

Diver Ted Judah didn’t dive to the deep sea, but he still got to see something that typically only lives at great depths. He shared photos of his find, and the iNaturalist community is loving it. Judah spotted a young ribbonfish called a king-of-the-salmon (Trachipterus altivelis) off the coast of California. This rare creature was just 15 feet below the surface, even though these animals typically live much deeper, down to 3,000 feet.

“I was amazed to see this little guy in only about 15 feet of water as I was starting my dive,” wrote Judah in his iNaturalist entry. “I never thought I’d see a living one!”

iNaturalist shared Judah’s find on its Facebook page, calling it “incredibly special.”
