‘Fast-Moving’ Pickett Fire Threatens Napa Valley Wineries

A wildfire started this week in Napa County, California, an area famous for its beautiful wineries. The Pickett Fire began on Thursday, August 21, and authorities say it doubled over its first night, reaching over 2,100 acres with 0% containment as of Friday morning the 22nd. Thankfully, that percentage has since moved up to 7%, although the size of the fire has also grown to 3,235 acres. (See the latest numbers here.)

“A fast-moving wildfire broke out Thursday on the northern edge of Calistoga, prompting emergency evacuation orders for parts of Napa County as crews raced to contain the flames,” reports the San Francisco Chronicle in an Instagram post sharing a haunting photo of the blaze.

The Pickett Fire is threatening “several well-known Napa Valley wineries,” according to the news outlet, and evacuation warnings are in place. So far, though, the fire hasn’t damaged any structures.

The CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit has been providing a stream of updates, including photos and videos, on social media.
