Hypothermic Hikers Rescued in New Hampshire’s White Mountains

The Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team shared footage of a rescue effort that likely saved more than one life. A group of hikers had summited Mount Lafayette in the White Mountains of New Hampshire before becoming hypothermic due to a lack of warm clothes and proper lighting after the sun went down. One person was unresponsive when the rescue team arrived on scene, but that person regained consciousness with medical attention.

While helping the first group, the rescue crew received a second call for help. Hypothermia was setting in on another group of hikers on the same mountain, and the team was also able to provide emergency supplies to this group while escorting them off the mountain.

“Hypothermia is always a concern in the Whites, at any time of year,” wrote the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team in an Instagram post sharing photos and videos from the rescue. “With our highly variable and extreme weather, we recommend always bringing with the 10 Essentials, including headlamps and extra clothing, as well as checking the higher summit forecasts from Mount Washington Observatory when hiking in the Whites.”
