‘I Had Accepted My Fate’: Skier Buried for 4 Hours Survives

Michael Harris says he’ll never forget the moment he woke up in the back of an ambulance, alive. Harris had been skiing at Stevens Pass Ski Resort in Washington when an avalanche buried him in snow. He had enough wiggle room to create a beachball-sized air pocket around his face, but time kept passing and no help came.

Thankfully, Harris’s wife checked his location using the Find My iPhone app, and she knew something was terribly wrong. She told the ski resort where to look, and they found Harris, unconscious but alive. He’d been buried for four hours.

“Up on that mountain, I’d resigned myself that I probably wasn’t coming down that mountain. I had kind of accepted my fate,” Harris told KIRO 7 News. “The surprise of waking up in the back of an ambulance, being treated, and feeling alive is something I will never forget.”
