Kayak Capsizes With Two People and Dog Onboard, Killing One

A woman has died after her kayak capsized in northern California’s Tomales Bay. A second kayaker, the deceased’s boyfriend, was rescued after the incident, along with the couple’s dog. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office recently shared footage of the rescue using a helicopter and a 100-foot longline.

The Sheriff’s Office described how a helicopter arrived on scene just 12 minutes after it received the request for help. One victim was clinging to the overturned kayak, and the dog was nearby. High winds and three-foot swells made conditions difficult for the survivor as he awaited rescue. Sadly, the second kayaker had slipped out of her life jacket and drowned.

“National Park Rangers responded by boat and safely recovered the dog from the water,” adds the Sheriff’s Office.
