Lacrosse Game Turns Wild as Dust Devil Sends Backpacks Flying

A dust devil hit a kids’ lacrosse game in Anthem, Arizona, and a video of the mayhem is going viral online. While the adults watching across the field were mortified by the power of the dust devil, which sent backpacks full of lacrosse gear flying through the air, the kids just wanted to run closer to it (much to mom who was recording the video’s dismay).

TikTok user @andreasch89 shared her hilarious video online, saying she was at her son’s lacrosse game when the dust devil “came out of nowhere.” It’s crazy to see how high the devil blew those backpacks.

A dust devil is “a common wind phenomenon” that occurs throughout much of the world. “These dust-filled vortices, created by strong surface heating, are generally smaller and less intense than a tornado,” NOAA’s National Weather Service says. “Typical diameters of dust devils range from 10 to 300 feet, with an average height of approximately 500 to 1000 feet. In most locations, dust devils typically last only a few minutes before dissipating.”
