Francisco Asturias recently filmed a jaguar from ultra-close range in a forest near the border of Mexico and Guatemala. He appears to be in a photographer’s hide of some sort, but the animal clearly knows he’s there. The tense footage shows the jaguar approach, pause, and then advance slowly, making eye contact with the camera/photographer the whole time. Ultimately, the predator turns and leaves without any drama.

Asturias shares frequent wildlife photos and videos on his social media, and he previously shared a video of himself wearing a staff shirt for Mirador-Río Azul National Park in northern Guatemala. He doesn’t provide context or location information, but a previous post suggests he and his team had been tracking jaguars during the days leading up to this moment.
