A dog owner in Boulder, Colorado rescued his pup from what he believes was a mountain lion by doing something unconventional—throwing a cup of coffee at it. Thankfully, it actually worked. Local news interviewed the man, Jake Dirnberger—who, as it happens, is a coffee shop manager—about the strange and scary incident.

Dirnberger told 9News that took his French bulldog, Snork, outside last week so the pup could go to the bathroom. Meanwhile, Dirnberger was enjoying a cup of coffee around the corner. He heard some scuffling noises followed by whimpering, then he saw a mountain lion holding onto his dog. (For whatever reason, 9News does not confirm with certainty that the animal was a mountain lion, although Dirnberger seems to believe that’s what he saw.)
Dirnberger and a neighbor tried yelling at the animal, but the noise didn’t scare it off. Dirnberger then threw his coffee at the cougar, which dropped Snork and ran off. The French bulldog has injuries to his face, but is recovering nicely.
