A devastated homeowner is warning others about the threat of mountain lions to pets. While Roger and Laurie Schultz were on a short road trip, their dogs had access to the backyard, where they preferred to spend most of the daylight hours. A mountain lion came into the Yucaipa, California yard Saturday afternoon and killed the family’s two dogs.

Security-camera footage shows the mountain lion dragging the dogs, a 65-pound Anatolian shepherd and a 90-pound husky, through the backyard like rag dolls. Roger Shultz told local news that even though they live near wild spaces, he’d only heard of one mountain-lion sighting in over 30 years before this incident.
Thanks to one of the dogs’ tracking collars, the Shultz family believes the mountain lion has a den close to the edge of their neighborhood. Roger Shultz is hoping that by sharing their footage, they’ll convince others in mountain-lion territory to take precaution, even in the light of day.
