A new report from the Trust for Public Land (TPL) and the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) suggests mountain bikers generate a solid amount of business for local communities in pursuit of good trails. In fact, the Economic Benefits of Mountain Biking report found that some mountain bikers spend over $1,000 per trip in certain locations.

“Mountain biking offers communities an opportunity to leverage their natural resources and tap into the growing outdoor recreation economy,” writes TPL in a report summary. “The study showcases how natural-surface trails not only boost local economies but also enhance community well-being and resilience.”
Key findings include the fact that mountain bikers spend an average of $416 per visit with local businesses. However, spending ranged drastically, from just over $100 on the low end to over $1,000 on the high end. The report also says that the sport creates employment opportunities. “Across the 13 locations included in the report, the trail networks generated up to 1,626 jobs and $54.1 million in labor income each year,” TPL says.
What’s more, the report suggests that mountain biking “indirectly contributes to economic wellbeing” in communities. It does this by promoting physical activity, which can improve riders’ physical and mental health. TPL also claims trails enhance nearby property values.
