When we visit amazing places and have a great experience, it can be very tempting to take a piece of that place home. However, Parks Canada took to social media to ask Jasper National Park visitors not to do this, and they have a very specific reason.

“Leave natural and historical objects where you find them,” wrote Parks Canada in its Facebook post. “Every object in Jasper National Park is part of a larger story.”

The impetus behind the post was a letter a former visitor sent containing a rock taken from the park years ago, alongside a hand-written apology.
“Removing objects from the park can impact our understanding of the area’s natural, geological and cultural heritage,” the post reads. “This is especially important after the 2024 wildfire. With vegetation burned away and more ground exposed, archaeological sites and historical objects may now be visible.”
Rather than collecting objects of interest in Jasper National Park, officials urge the public to take photos. If the object may have historical importance, record the location and contact the park.
